What is Activated Carbon?
Activated Carbon (AC) is a carbonaceous skeleton with a large network of pores. It is these pores that trap organic contaminants. All AC comprise of a variance of pore sizes - micro-pores, meso-pores and macro-pores. The raw materials used and even the activated method, shall determine:
  1. Type of activated carbon
  2. Pore structure
  3. Hardness
  4. Pore distribution
  5. Overall quality
A porous form of carbon, manufactured from carbonaceous raw materials (Coconut Shell, Coal, Peat, Wood), with a crystalline structure similar in some respects to graphite.

Organic Impurities are trapped within the porous structure via adsorption.*

Next to adsorption, activated carbons act as an active reagent in the presence of oxidative disinfectants such as chlorine and ozone when percolated with water, reducing oxidants at the activated carbon.

An adsorbent, available as Black Granules, Pellets or Powder used in the Purification, Separation, and Concentration of Liquids and Gases, in Recovery of Precious Metals from Ores, as a Catalyst Support and numerous other applications.

Manufactured by Chemical or high temperature steam activation characterized by an Extensive Network of Molecular size Internal Pores, which results in its large Internal Surface Area of 500 - 2500 m2 /g (150 acres of surface area per pound).

An imbalance of forces exists on the carbon atoms at the pore wall surface. To neutralize this imbalance, molecules are physically adsorbed, i.e., drawn and held physically to the pore wall (Van der Waals forces).

Typically 1 m3 of Activated Carbon with 0.3m3 of internal pores can adsorb 30 m3 or more of a gas, even if present in low concentrations in a carrier.

The Pore Size Distribution and Chemical/Polar nature of the surface markedly influences the selective Adsorption Function
