Applications
Activated carbon is used in retaining the quality of food, making good food look good, smell good and taste good. LAJU Carbon offers the food processing industry a wide range of products for keeping things clean without unwanted organic contaminants. In LAJU, all our manufacturing facility are ISO 9001:2000 certified, where quality assurance is built into the stringent quality processes for manufacturing and handling, from raw materials to activation processes. The usage of activated carbon ranges infinitely in the food industry. Below are established applications in the food industry.

Purification of natural Glycerine
LAJU Carbon is used in the purification of natural glycerine. LAJU's Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) are used for removal of organic impurities like coloured matter and odour causing substances from glycerine. GAC is commonly used to purify concentrated glycerine to meet purity requirements in the food and pharmaceutical industries.

Alcoholic Beverages
LAJU Carbon's activated carbon is often used to decolourise, prevent turbidity during aging or to remove unwanted congeners such as fusel oils and aldehydes that affects taste and odours in the production of beer, whiskey, rum and vodka, etc.

Fruit Juices
LAJU Carbon offers activated carbon products that effective, cost-efficient, and proven solutions in the purification of fruit juices such as apple juice. Orange juice and grape juice. The main job is to remove pink and brown coloured polyphenois and dark brown coloured melanoidins. Selected activated carbon can also be used in the removal of undesirable taste compounds, colour precursors created during fruit juice processing, traces of pesticides and fungicide residues such as the mycotoxin Patulin.

Edible Oils and Fats
In the bleaching processes of edible oils such as palm oil, coconut oil, sunflower oil and soybean oil, specific powdered activated carbon grades are used in with an adsorbent mixture. The use of powdered activated carbon in the adsorbent mixture is practical when the oils have a high content of natural pigments. Especially in refining coconut oil and sunflower oil, the use of powdered activated carbon is inevitable when carcinogenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) have to be removed to meet health requirements in the market for refined edible oils.

Starch sweeteners
LAJU Carbon's granular activated carbon and powdered activated carbon are used for the decolourisation of purification of starch sweeteners such as glucose, dextrose, maltose, fructose and maltodextrins. Most starch sweeteners are used also as intermediate materials in the production of sorbitol, citric acid, lactic acid, monosodium glutamate (MSG), etc.

Cane Sugar Refining
LAJU Carbon's granular activated carbon and powdered activated carbon are used in the decolourisation of cane sugar syrups before the crystallisation of refined white granulated sugar. LAJU carbon are dedicated too adsorb plant pigments from suagr cane and the colours created during processing. Activated carbon has the capability to remove non-colourant impurities as well along with the colour amino acids and polysaccharides.

In liquid sugar, especially in the beverage industry, powdered activated carbon is used for decolourisation and improvement of the sensory characteristics of sugar syrup. Depending on the origin of the refined granulated sugar and the type of beverage to be produced, dedicated powdered activated carbon can be used to meet high standards for colour and sensory characteristics required by soft drinks, alcoholic beverages, etc.
